€18,450

East Coast Carpentry's own price for a timber-clad room, 5 m × 3 m (15 m²), VAT included. It includes delivery and installation, the insulated frame, an EPDM roof, double glazing, laminate flooring, internal electrics and a heater; the armoured power cable to your fuse board is quoted separately.

  • A ground screw foundation is from €90 to €110 a m² (Loghouse.ie).
  • Power from the house is from €15 a metre of cable (Loghouse.ie), and it has to be done by a Registered Electrical Contractor (CRU).
  • Avant Money's national guide gives €13,500 to €17,500 for a medium room, 4 m × 4 m to 5 m × 5 m.

How this is worked out

Timber cabin: Loghouse.ie's listed price for that size, or the nearest listed size where the answer says so; at 12 m², where none is listed, the area times their brochure rate of €900 to €1,200 a m² for smaller rooms. Insulated rooms: East Coast Carpentry's own price for that size, VAT, delivery and installation included. The multiplication is ours. Prices read on 3 November 2026. It's an estimate, never a quote.

The floor

A floor that takes weights

  • Tell the company it's a gym before they price the base. Dropped weights and a rack need a stiffer floor than an office.
  • Rubber gym tiles on top spread the load and protect the floor.
  • A concrete slab base takes the most load. Ground screws and a timber frame can be built for it, with closer joists.

Height

Room for overhead lifts

Class 3 allows 3 m to the top with a flat roof, 4 m with a tiled or slated pitched roof (S.I. 338 of 2026). After the base, the floor and the roof build-up, a flat-roofed room gives about 2.4 m to 2.6 m inside, depending on the build. Ask for the inside ceiling height in writing if you'll press overhead or use a pull-up bar.

Air

Ventilation and damp

  • A gym room gets humid. Opening windows on two sides, or a trickle vent and an extractor fan, keep condensation down.
  • Insulation and a vapour control layer stop the walls getting cold and wet inside. See insulated garden rooms.

Before you choose a spot

  • Measure the garden. At least 25 m² of it has to stay open for the room to be exempt.
  • Check how far the spot is from the house: the power cable runs that distance, and it's priced separately.
  • Look at side access. Panels and a base have to get through.
  • On a sloping hillside garden, ask about the base before anything else.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How big should a garden gym be?

A rack, a bench and floor space fit in about 4 m × 3 m. A bike or rower as well wants 5 m × 4 m.

Is a garden gym exempt from planning?

Yes, if it fits Class 3: up to 30 m² for all garden structures together, 25 m² of garden left, 3 m high with a flat roof, used by the household (S.I. 338 of 2026).

Can I put a gym in a log cabin?

Yes, but a thin-walled cabin is cold in winter and the floor may need strengthening. Ask about both.
